Capacity Zero: The Capacity for Complexity

Before we ask, “What should I do?” perhaps there is a more fundamental question:

How much reality can I bear right now?

In this episode, I introduce what I now believe is the zeroth capacity of ethical adulthood—the capacity that makes all the others possible. Before we can tolerate discomfort, repair relationships, understand power, grieve honestly, or act without guarantees, we must first be able to receive reality without collapsing it into certainty or abstraction.

Using the metaphor of a camera, I explore what happens when our aperture becomes too narrow, when it opens too wide, and how we might learn to remain in contact with the people living inside our maps of reality.

This episode marks the beginning of a new direction for Season Three, where we’ll explore the many maps humans have created to make sense of existence—not to determine which one is right, but to understand what each reveals, what each obscures, and how each can either deepen or diminish our capacity for ethical adulthood.

Thanks for listening.
